Beyond the chatbot: Claude as work infrastructure
Since its launch, Claude has often been presented as "an AI assistant for writing emails". This vision considerably underestimates what Claude can contribute in a structured professional context. After 18 months of intensive use in my IT consulting assignments, here's what I discovered.
The five professional dimensions of Claude
1. Claude as analysis partner
Submit an 80-page RFP in its entirety to Claude, along with your budget constraints and team profile. It produces a structured feasibility analysis, identifies risks, proposes a response approach, and flags attention points often missed during a quick read.
2. Claude as specification writer
Transforming a verbal discussion into structured functional specifications is one of the most time-consuming tasks for a BA. Claude reduces this time by 60–70%, producing well-formed user stories, precise acceptance criteria, and associated test cases.
3. Claude as quality reviewer
Before submitting an important document, ask Claude to play the role of a critical reader: "You are a sceptical CIO. What objections would you raise to this proposal?" The quality of documents submitted to decision-makers improves significantly.
4. Claude as meeting preparer
Give Claude the previous meeting minutes, the list of participants and the next meeting's agenda. It generates a personalised briefing for each participant, questions to anticipate, and potential friction points.
5. Claude as internal trainer
Claude can explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, create training modules on tools specific to your organisation, and answer team questions about internal processes — if you provide the documentation.
What Claude will not replace
"Claude is a force multiplier, not a substitute. It amplifies your judgement and expertise — it doesn't replace them."
Commercial negotiation, building trust with a difficult client, decision-making in total ambiguity, leadership in crisis — these dimensions remain irreducibly human, and will remain so for a long time.
Recommended configuration for professional use
To maximise Claude's effectiveness in a professional context: create projects with persistent context (client description, constraints, glossary), use custom instructions to define your working style and preferences, and activate the relevant MCP servers to connect Claude to your business tools.
