Introduction

In agile project management, knowing how to prioritize is a core skill. When tasks pile up and urgent requests flow in, how can you stay aligned with business value? Two complementary visual tools can help: the Eisenhower Matrix and decision flowcharts.

The Eisenhower Matrix

Popularized by the American president of the same name, this matrix helps classify tasks by urgency and importance:

  • Urgent & important: do it now
  • Important but not urgent: schedule it
  • Urgent but not important: delegate it
  • Neither urgent nor important: eliminate it

The decision flowchart

This helps structure a logical prioritization sequence. At each node, a question leads to an action or decision. This type of diagram is useful for validating business criteria or applying conditional rules.

A complementary approach

Used together, these tools streamline arbitration, avoid wasted time, and focus effort where it brings the most value. The Product Owner, PMO, or agile team can use them during sprint planning or prioritization committees.

Conclusion

Between perceived urgency and real importance, quick and sound decisions are essential. Combining a strategic tool (Eisenhower) with an operational one (flowchart) offers a powerful framework to stay on track. To prioritize is to choose — with full awareness.
